The Art of Crystalline Glazing: Basic Techniques About the Authors Jon Price is a third-generation potter. He began making ceramics in earnest when he was 10 years old. In 1989 he turned his attention entirely to crystalline glazing. Since 1995 he has made his living exclusively by creating and selling crystalline-glazed porcelain. Jon's approach to ceramics is that of the typical artist: He gets an idea and tries it out. If it works, great; if not, he goes on to the next idea. Using this intuitive approach, he has developed many exquisite crystalline glazes. LeRoy Price (Jon's father) has a PhD in Physics from the University of California, Berkeley, and was on the faculty of the Physics Department of the University of California, Irvine, for 30 years. He has been involved with ceramics for over 35 years, specializing in glaze development. His approach to ceramics is very different from that of his son. Because of his scientific training he approaches ceramics in a very methodical manner. He plans his investigations in detail, carefully recording all of his observations. He has over 10,000 carefully cataloged test tiles of crystalline glazes. In addition, he has a vast ceramics library including over 150 books and articles on crystalline glazes. |
